THE GAMBA ACTION GROUP – GAG (NT).

Aims of the Gamba Action Group.

GAG (NT)’s initial aim is to educate people about the serious impact Gamba Grass is having on our environment and the unprecedented degradation to the environment that will occur if this invasion is not halted as soon as possible. This is essential to prevent the further spread of Gamba throughout the Northern Territory, as well as west into the Kimberley, and eastward to Queensland.

• Provide information on Grass grass, including how to identifying it, the most cost effective means of control, and how to stop its spread into areas that are currently Gamba free.
• Help coordinate effective weed control efforts between government agencies, local councils, interested NGO’s and the wider community.
• Lobby politicians to have Gamba Grass declared as a noxious weed.
• Develop a centralised map of the distribution of Gamba in the NT.

To realise its goals, GAG (NT) has received funding from the NT government’s 2005 environmeNT Grants and an award of $500 from Environment Centre NT/Greenpeace on the occasion of the 2005 World Environment Day. This group has also attracted support from the Local Government Association, Charles Darwin University, CSIRO, the Mines Division of DBIRD, the Bushfire Council, various local government councils, Keep Australia Beautiful NT, the Northern Territory Minerals Council (Inc) and the Environment Centre NT.
